About This Content A total of 842 “Black Five” locomotives were built for the London, Midland and Scottish and later British Railways; and, a truly definitive add-on is unleashed, in the form of Partner Programme developer Bossman Games’ fantastic LMS Stanier Class 5!What became one of the more memorable locomotives in British rail history starts its story in the early 1930s, when William Stanier, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), sought to design a new and suitably powerful mixed-traffic locomotive. In his early LMS days, Stanier used his engineering skills which he acquired while working for GWR, however steadily refining and honing his own unique style of locomotive. When the LMS needed more powerful traction, Stanier’s response was equivalent to the GWR’s Hall Class, a 4-6-0 with a rating of 5 for passenger, and 5 for freight – the Stanier Class 5.Originally the Class 5 fleet was known as “Black Stanier”, in contrast to the “Red Stanier” Jubilee Class; however, when ‘5’ was seen adorned on the cab side from 1940 onwards, a new “Black Five” name befell the fleet. The do-anything attitude of the Black Five saw their popularity rise with both crews and enthusiasts alike – it could turn up almost anywhere, get the job done, and look good while doing it – the fleet of 842 was a familiar sight right up until the end of steam. The Black Fives were sadly scrapped in droves, but an impressive 18 were saved for use on both preservation railways and mainline railtours, and the preserved fleet has a history of ‘acting’ by means of temporary alternative numbers to revive lost members of the class. The Stanier Class 5 from Bossman Games arrives with no comparison and includes:Circa-2018 representations of preserved 45407, 44871 & 45212, including 45407's appearance as 45157 “The Glasgow Highlander”British Railways with Early & Late Emblem, Clean & WeatheredLMS 1930s Lined Black, Unlined Black both Clean & WeatheredWelded and rivetted tendersMK1 Coaches in BR Maroon with BR1 bogiesCirca-2018 MK2A BFK Support CoachWith the ability to drive any example of the class, in both LMS and BR eras, plus preserved examples, a whole range of advanced features, incredible detail throughout, 10 Career scenarios and so much more, the Stanier Class 5 rightfully earns its place within the Pro Range! The Bossman Games Black 5 is a DLC i've looked foward to for a long time. The Black 5 that came default for so many years with railworks was good for its time, but has shown its age. The new engine from Bossman Games brings realism to British steam that hasnt really been seen all that much. The Black 5 has amazing sounds and visuals that will make you believe you are at the throttle of a real Black 5. The simulation is superb, boasting all the qwerks of the real engine, making for a fun learning curve. The engine is also the only steam locomotive in TS that is equiped with the Electric Token System for use on the West Highland Line Extension, a great added feature that adds more realism to the game.I highly recomend this DLC to any British steam fans, or just for people looking for a very in-depth simulation of a locomotive.. Well before starting with the praise we'll start off by recommending the reading of the manual as the new Black 5 is certainly not a simple pick up and go loco like the old Kuju model. Now for the praise. BMG have done a fantastic job on making the eagerly awaited and improved Black 5 for TS. Nicely detailed inside and out and great sounds to go with it too it has easily earned it's Pro label. Several types are including British Rail, LMS and preserved also there are those with and without AWS fitted even the token system used on the West Highland line. Other rollingstock included are a set of Mk1 coaches, one Mk2 coach with BMG markings, maroon GUV vans, 16t mineral wagons and brake van.As for the price it depends on if you're a fan of the Black 5 or not. I found it ok considering what you get and the selection of scenarios included which is neat. One item to note that is that the manual doesn't include headlamp formations or their meaning so I put together a basic guide showing the headcodes and their uses. https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/sharedfiles\/filedetails\/?id=1414556013 In summary I highly recommend this to any Black 5 or British steam fan as this add-on is a worthy successor to the well worn Kuju model. A solid 10\/10. This is (imho) the best European steam loco available on the Steam Store. Here is my honest appraisal:Pros: Looks fantastic with great attention to detail. It took a noob like me from being HUD reliant, to feeling confident pulling levers etcin the cab - with very little difficulty! (reading the manual is required)Cold start routine is a great thing for immersion seekers.Plenty of things to click, press, open, twiddle, play with - both in the cab and on the exterior.Good soundsCons:Shed codes cannot be changed (RIP to accuracy in scenarios set in the 60's etc)No details for scenario makers in the manual regarding numbering & placement of headcode lights. Conclusion:As u can see there is no reason really, to say no to this loco - I love it to bits despite it's minor flaws.Thumbs up from me.. i love it good work. Very nice advanced steamloc LMS Stanier Class 5 congrats !greetings rob "9F-eveningstar". The Bossman Games - LMS Stanier Black 5. What do i think of it for its Reasonable Price.Well. Its very detailed, Crisp 3D Models of the Smokebox, Valve Gear, Safety Valves, Cab, Rivets etc.Accompanied by a decent selection of whistles (some were portted off PR Black 5), but overall nice sounds - great chuffs. On the basis on how to drive... we'll at first it seem straight forward... but i struggled to get over 40MPH...However, with good practise, i made my Black 5 run at Mainline Speeds of over 60MPH, and down S&D at 100+ MPH.People say its hard... but really its mainly focused at advanced players - but there are Driving aids to help with the newcomers - though they are a bit buggy at most of the times.Overall, a decent pack, comes with the liveries in BR, LMS and Weathered Varients. Rolling Stock (Mk1s, Mk2 Support, Parcel Coach, 16T wagons, Brake Van - from Woodhead), and 10 Scenarios.A Newly Released DLC is bound to cause misfires and calamities... there are bugs... and Bossman Games are currently making an update to fix them - also the manual is a bit vague occasionally.
